Exploring the crisscrossing between fashion, sustainability, and individuality through a hands-on try-on workstation involving the use of pre-owned clothing. Our wardrobe choices can reflect a commitment to sustainability, the world around us all while allowing for personal expression. By only having used garments, I aim to challenge the idea of consumerism and fast fashion, how do we avoid falling into a shopping spree for the latest trends.
My work invites viewers to engage in the idea of the “Politics of Capitalism” as it relates to fashion. I encourage participants/viewers to rethink their approach to clothing. Through the familiar experience of trying on clothes, I emphasize that style can be both personal and sustainable. Each piece has sourced from borrowed, used or already owned items, keeping on the theme of upcycling and the idea that creativity can flourish within constraints.
By evoking the spirit of the punk rockers of the 70s and 80s who reimagined their garments to create distinct looks. Whether you wish to engage in more standard looks or think more outside the box, this as your own personal expiration.
I hope to inspire viewers to take ownership of their style without defaulting to consumerism or modern ideas. This project asks: How can we show or explore our identities through what we already possess? The act of upcycling becomes a pathway to self-discovery, allowing individuals to craft unique expressions of themselves without the pressure to conform to fleeting trends.
So come have a try on and see how you can engage in the work and don't forget to say cheese ❤️
